Old-Time Fiddling w/ Rinn Netherton

Join Rinn Netherton for an exploration into Old-Time Fiddling. This three week series will give you tools to bring your favorite old time tunes to life. Bring your instrument and - if it helps you learn - a recording device (cellphone) or a notebook and pencil. 

Beginner class:
Learn to play in the American folk tradition of old time fiddle. This class will teach common techniques used in old time fiddle music such as the Nashville shuffle and pulse, as well as how to learn tunes by ear. *For this class we recommend at least one year of playing experience


Intermediate class:
Build your ability to play in the American folk tradition of old time fiddle. This class will teach intermediate techniques used in old time fiddle music such as the Georgia shuffle and circle bowing, as well as explore regional styles of old time. Knowing a few Old-Time Tunes
*For this class we recommend being familiar with a few Old-Time tunes and being able to play them at a medium to fast tempo

Dates: December 6th, 13th, 20th

Time: Beginner Class 10am-11am, Intermediate Class 11:30am-12:30pm

Location: St. Louis String Collective; 3530 Greenwood Blvd

Registration closes Saturday November 29th

We will be filming each class and the videos will be made available to participants at the end of the session.

Rinn Netherton is a folk, old-time, swing, and jazz multi-instrumentalist active in the St. Louis area. They found their musical beginning on violin at age 11 playing in local old-time jam sessions in St. Louis, and over time developed a powerful, energetic fiddle style with which they won first place at the prestigious Old Time Fiddle Championship at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas in 2016. Their music can be heard in listening rooms, dance halls, festival and concert stages, and restaurants, and they are an active member of swing trio the Triplets of Grubville, swing quartet the Hot Club of St. Louis, multi-genre duo Cambia, old-time quartet The Short List, contra dance band duo Roger Wilco, folk quartet Run Down Boots and The New Soles, and various other projects. In addition to their musical endeavors, they spend their 9-5 each work week as an analyst.
